ABOUT THE DALEY LIBRARY COLLECTION

CIRCULATING BOOKS

The circulating collection consists of books that can be checked out by library users for a specific period of time, or borrowing period. The length of the borrowing period may vary according to your borrowing status. For an explanation see policies and procedures.

THE REFERENCE COLLECTION

The reference collection consists of books that do not ever circulate. They remain in the library at all times Like the circulating collection they are classified according to the LC (Library of Congress) system. The type of items to be found in the reference collection include: dictionaries, encyclopedias, subject specific encyclopedias, atlases, and almanacs.

RESERVE BOOKS

Reserve holdings are a special type of circulating book. A reserve item has been designated as a reserve by either a librarian, or a faculty member. A faculty member may place certain items on reserve as supporting materials for a particular course. They have shorter circulating periods that range from two hours to seven days. The two hour reserves must be used within the library itself. Seven day reserves have been selected by the library staff. For the most part these are a series of books that support the curriculum such as the Opposing Viewpoints series.

USING THE ELECTRONIC CATALOG OR OPAC TO FIND BOOKS

You can search for books and other holdings electronically on the Daley Library OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). Before you begin to search for books you should know that the OPAC is searchable by Author, Title, Subject or keyword. Subject searches will look for recognized Library of Congress (LC) subject headings. These subject headings utilize a particular controlled vocabulary. If you are unsure of the correct subject heading you can refer to the four volume Library of Congress Subject Headings for guidance, or you can use an additional search option that is available electronically. This option is Keyword search. A keyword search will search for a term in all indexed fields in the record. It does not lock your search into a controlled vocabulary. For example, if you were looking for library books on the "SAT" test and searched for a subject you would get 0 results. If you searched for "SAT" as a keyword you would find several results. A dropdown menu is available to refine your searches. It will limit searches by date, by language, or by material type. A link will wake you to the catalog's doorway. To get in you must click on "Guest" button. You will then be able to search for holdings in the Daley College Library and the other City Colleges as well.

Not all library holdings appear in the catalog. To find periodicals you must use and index. Print indexes can be found on the index table located behind the refernce desk. Online indexes and databases are also available for use.

When on campus, search the Daley OPAC and locate Daley College holdings electronically on the catalog.

When off campus, search the Daley OPAC and locate Daley College holdings electronically on the catalog. When off campus all CCC holdings will be searched by default. To search Daley's holdings select Daley College in the drop down menu.

FINDING ARTICLES: ABOUT PERIODICALS (SERIALS)

The Daley College Library subscribes to over 200 current periodicals and newspapers. For a list of our periodical holdings. It is necessary to use the right tool to locate articles that have appeared in periodicals. This tool is called an index. Indexes are available in different formats, print and on-line.

ABOUT PERIODICAL INDEXES

If you want to locate articles about a particular topic in periodicals (newspapers, magazines or Journals) it is necessary to use an index. An Index will provide a citation, which will give you the author and title of an article, and information about the source of the article. The name of the periodical, volume number, date, and pages will be given. Some indexes provide additional information: an abstract which is a brief description of the article. Daley College provides numerous indexes in different formats (print, CD-ROM, and on-line databases) to assist users.

Print indexes include The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, The Reader's Guide with Abstracts, The Humanities Index, The Social Sciences Index, CINAHL, The Short Story Index, and Book Review Digest. Online subscription database indexes are accessible via the library's Internet terminals. PROQUEST, FIRST SEARCH, EBSCO, and WILSON WEB provide citations, citations, abstracts, as well as full text articles. INFOTRAC in CD-ROM format at one stand alone station provides citations, citations with abstracts, and some full text as a back up unit to the online databases. These diverse sources of full text articles include articles from periodicals that are not included in Daley's own collection, and provide users with additional resources. Search for articles using the online Periodical Indexes and Subscription Databases.
