More Information for Nursing Program


Prerequisites for a Nursing Program application (see list on side panel) must be completed before it is eligible to be submitted to the Admission Committee.

• Students must pass a Reading Compass test with a minimum score of a 12th grade level.

• DEADLINE – The following are requirements for admission and must be on file in the Nursing Department by October 15th (fall semester) through February 15th only (spring semester) of the year for which you are applying.
- Completed application for the nursing program.
- High school diploma of GED certificate.
- Transcript of college credits earned at any other college/university.

TO EXPEDITE YOUR APPLICATION

• Send official transcripts to the Admissions Office and copies to Nursing Office, Room 3114.
• Schedule an appointment with the pre-nursing advisor early in your college career.
• Submit your mid-term grades for current classes. Early mid-term grade report sheets are available in the nursing office to Daley students only. Students enrolled elsewhere should request their instructor to fax their mid-term grades on school’s official letterhead to (773) 838-7524
attn: Nursing Department as soon as possible.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

1. Information for required (Reading Compass) test may be obtained from the Nursing Department Office, Room 3114.
2. All applicants regardless of acceptance or denial are notified by mail.
3. Notify us if you have a change of address or telephone number.
4. Although it is not required, pre-nursing students usually seek employment in health care positions to gain some clinical experience.
5. Verify with the Admission’s Office that all required official records have been received.
6. Applicants are selected by the Admission Committee. Filing an application does not mean acceptance into the nursing program
7. Preference for admission will be given to students who (1) have earned the highest grades/test scores, (2) have completed all course work at Daley College, (3) are being admitted into Nursing 101 for the first time.
Eligibility for NCLEX-RN Exam
The committee on Nursing of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation will determine the eligibility of any applicant to take the NCLEX-RN if there is a history of any of the following:
 Conviction of a felony
 History of physical of mental disease or substance abuse
 Denial of any professional license
 Dishonorable discharge from the service
 Other than U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted alien

Frequently Asked Questions

• How are students admitted to the nursing program?
All eligible students seeking admission to the nursing program must submit a completed application, with the material requested attached. Applications are reviewed and then submitted to the nursing admissions committee for consideration and selection.

• Is there a waiting list for students to be admitted to the program?
There is no waiting list and applications are not kept on file. A student may reapply at a later date with a new application.

• Do I need to be a Nursing Assistant to apply to the program?
No. Though some students have previous healthcare experience, but none is required for admission to our nursing program.

• How long is the nursing program?
Once admitted the course of study is designed to be completed in two years.

• Is the nursing program accredited?
Yes. This program is fully accredited by NLNAC (National League for Nurses Accrediting Commission, Inc.)

• Will my general education course transfer to a four year college/university?
Most courses are approved for transfer to 4 year college/university, please seek assistance from a college advisor regarding specific courses.

• Will I be a registered nurse when I complete the program?
No. This program prepares its graduates to be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam. Upon passing this exam, licensure to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse will be granted by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and Finance.

• How do I get started?
The first step is to start in the admissions office. In admissions you can obtain a review of transcripts (high school, previous college, foreign credentials) and apply for admission to Richard J. Daley College. The next step is to speak to a college advisor about preparation and course selection.
