How do I know which ESL level and course to sign up for?
All students who enter our ESL program take a placement test in order to assess which level is best for them. The test consists of multiple-choice grammar questions, a writing task, and a short interview. There is no charge to take the test.

How much does it cost?

What types of support and facilities do you offer?
Our multi-media lab on the 3rd floor has up-to-date computers with current language learning software, Internet access, audio and visual learning equipment, and is staffed by students and teachers to offer help and support. The Tutoring Center on the 4th floor and the Writing Lab on the 11th floor offer free tutoring and help with papers. Harold Washington College also has a library and other computer labs.
Can I take other college courses in addition to ESL courses?
Based on their level of English and academic plans, students in ESL may take selected college-level courses while completing the ESL program. Additional college courses especially designed for ESL students include Popular Culture and Social Science. Many advanced ESL students take Mathematics, Physics, Business, Computer Science, Art, and other college courses.
How do I move from one ESL level to another?
In each Integrated (Reading, Writing, and Grammar) course in each level, students take an exit exam. Based on those results, students will move on to the next level.
