Guideline for Challenge Problems
Spring 2009
- Challenge problems will be posted
on the web sporadically. They are
moderately hard to very hard. Do
not try to do many at once.
Try one or two only at a time.
- Because of the difficulty of
these problems, you are encouraged to discuss them with me in my
office. I will help you to
discover a solution. Most student
can master these problems, but they take effort—and often also discussions
with me.
- These problems must be worked on
alone or with me. Giving or
receiving help from anyone but me will be considered cheating and dealt
with accordingly.
- These problems may involve
supplementary material which we will not cover during class.
- Submit these problems separately
from your normal homework.
- Include explanations, and show
your work.
- Credit will only be given
for complete answers. Incorrect or
incomplete submissions will be returned with suggestions for
improvement. You may submit a
problem as many times as necessary.
- Problems may be submitted at
any time until three weeks before the final exam. If you
have an interest in doing these problems, do not leave it to the end of
the term: be sure to read the
previous note!
- Each complete problem will
increase your participation grade by approximately the equivalent of two
days' class participation (depending on difficulty).
- These problems are no substitute
for regularly assigned coursework.
