Welcome
to a site dedicated to a select group of women writers who share
a specific place - the United States-and a specific time-the twentieth
century. They share a passion for their work and a talent for creating
characters and uncommon stories. One of the writers, Joyce Carol
Oates, wrote, "Does it matter which entrance you use to enter
a walled garden? Once you're inside and have closed the door?"
Think
of this site as a walled garden with bright colors, wondrous delights,
and a few surprises. We have selected ten writers who represent
a variety of cultures, styles, and personalities. Each author has
a brief biography and links to sites which provide more information
about her life and her work. Also, there is a time line which helps
to organize the authors' works.
In
addition, there are student activities which focus on the authors
and their works. Activity A is a quiz based on the ten authors'
biographies. Visitors can test their knowledge about the authors.
Activity B involves matching characters with their stories. Activity
C focuses on geographic locations which are important in the authors'
lives. Finally, Activity D offers some suggestions for a creative
writing project.
This
web site was made possible by a Library Leadership Grant from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services and the City Colleges of
Chicago. We welcome your comments about our site. Enjoy your visit
to the twentieth century and the world of American women writers.
